Production Notes
Bring It On is a comedy about two rival cheerleading squads who are butting heads-and busting moves-to see to it that nothing stands in the way of making it to the top.
"Jessica Bendinger's screenplay really appealed to me." Says the director Peyton Reed. "It mines this very specific world that I hadn't seen in a film before - the fanatical world of cheerleading. I went into it expecting a take on cheerleading that would perhaps try to be overly hip, hating its characters whom you really like - and you find yourself really rooting for them."
Bendinger had been fascinated by the world of cheerleading for years (she began watching ESPN's televised cheerleading championships religiously in the mid-'80's). While working at MTV News, she became consumed with the idea of doing a documentary on the cheerleading nationals competition, but her idea was met with indifference. Turning to screenwriting, Bendinger had a conversation with her agent.
"He asked me what I was most passionate about," Bendinger recalls. "I responded that I love the sport of competitive cheerleading and I'd love to do a movie about it - and Bring It On was born!"
Star Kirsten Dunst was at first concerned that this take on cheerleader could be a bit of a put-down, and she was pleased by the finial tone of the screenplay. "It actually shows cheerleaders in a really good light," says the actress. "Cheerleading is truly a sport, and the participants are talented, hard working athletes. It takes a lot of dedication and long hours of practice - it's like a combination of dancing and gymnastics."
"The movie gives cheerleaders the justice they deserve." Adds co-star Eliza Dushku. "We had four weeks of cheerleading boot camp to get ready for this, and it was really, genuinely hard. We worked with real professional cheerleaders and they were just amazing. They taught us so much, so fast."
At cheerleading camp, the actors trained with veteran cheer coach Ray Jasper, as well as with a choreographer and a hip-hop choreographer. "Ray Jasper also serves as our technical advisor for cheer rules, regulations and moves - and he worked closely with us in casting the additional cheerleaders from the ranks of actual cheer squads around the country." Says director Reed.
Each cheerleading squad in the film is composed of 20 individuals (eight actors and 12 actuals cheerleaders). "We were fortunate to have some of the top cheerleaders in the country on these squads," Reed continues. "They helped to motivate Kirsten, Eliza, Gabrielle [Union] and the rest of the actors during cheer camp. There was a real exhilaration for me in seeing an actor doing difficult moves successfully - they were truly dedicated in their preparation and it shows."
Cheerleaders have their own rhythm and also their own language, a vocabulary of words and phases that are quite foreign to the uninitiated. "One of the more intimidating things about this film for me was learning all of this lingo," Reed confesses. The director found all the answers in the official National Federation Cheerleading guidelines, including the precise definitions for such elusive terms as stunting (any kind of slip or specialized move), liberty heel stretch (involves the guy holding the girl by one foot) and pinch a penny (don't ask).
The filmakers would like to assure audiences that no cheerleaders were harmed (seriously) during the making of this movie.
